Promoting the exchange of information and ideas pertaining to music theory since 1986.
The officers of the New England Conference of Music Theorists regretfully announce that the organization will be in hibernation for the remainder of the 2020–21 academic year. First and foremost, this means that, for the second consecutive year, we will not convene in April for our annual meeting, which has heretofore occurred without interruption since 1986.
We have not arrived at this decision lightly. The annual meeting has always been an event where the comradery—the opportunity to come together to establish new friendships and maintain old—has been at least as important as the presentation of scholarship. Given this, and the inevitable community-wide burnout with online meetings and events come April, we feel that it is in keeping with the spirit of NECMT to go on hiatus rather than move to an online format.
In accordance with this decision, and in consultation with past NECMT officers, the 2020–21 year will not be counted toward the fulfillment of terms for elected officers.
With the recent good news of not one, but two vaccines for COVID-19 now in the process of being made available to the public, we fully expect that we will be back to business as usual for our next annual meeting in April 2022. To make up for this unfortunate interruption, we will be planning a very special conference—including an exceptional banquet—when we are able once again to meet in person.
We look forward to seeing you for the festivities at NECMT 2022. In the meantime, we wish you good health and positive spirits through the ongoing challenges of life amid the pandemic.

Christopher White (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), Secretary
Andrew Schartmann (New England Conservatory), Treasurer
